I’m going to go to the different beaches here on Nantucket over the next couple of weeks to see how they are faring this winter. I started with a trip out to Smith’s Point. It was very windy and very cold out there today but the sky was a bright blue and the sand was free of footprints and tire tracks. The erosion fence seems to be doing it’s job, collecting sand into mini-dunes.

Interesting report from Smith’s Point and excellent black and white shots.

Nice shots. Really goes to show how well the snow fence works out there on the beach. I keep meaning to take a walk out there with my camera of course. Been busy looking for deer antlers.

Thanks Frank and Martie. I looked at Madaket beach also – it’s pretty grim looking, not much beach at the end of the road. I heard it is a similar situation at Cisco. We need the give and take of sand to give back a bit.

Those shadows in both images are just delightful. They are so much stronger in the B/W than in color I think! Nicely done.

  5. Sharon says:

Thanks Derrick. The sun is so low in the sky this time of year. I like the shadows it casts.

  6. Peaceful and lovely light.

    Thank you, Ciel and Dom!

  9. I like the parallel lines in the second photograph and how they echo in the fence, shadow, and the beach.

  10. Sharon says:

Thank you, David. I would like to have explored more compositions but you have to be very careful not to get on the dunes they are trying so hard to build-up.

Very nice B&W images, and you picked the right time of day to get long shadows… My preference for the second one, with the ridges of sand that parallel the fence and the sea. Did you consider cropping the first one on the left and at the bottom, to bring the focus more on the fence on the right and its shadow?

  12. Sharon says:

Thank you, Claude. I think your crop suggestion is worth having a look at. I’m not satisfied with the composition.

Beautiful B/W work. The patterns and textures in the sand are superb.

  16. Sharon says:

Thank you, PJ. All that wind really helped with the sand patterns. I’ve heard that the winds you have in Montana can be fierce!

  17. Fabian says:

A very nice black and white. The structure of the sand is very interesting

  18. Sharon says:

    Thank you, Fabian.

  19. Barry says:

Nice shots, Sharon. Love the concentricity of lines in the 2nd! Beautifully seen.

  20. Sharon says:

Thank you, Barry! I always enjoy your dune shots.
