We’ll be covering the installation of the fourth geotextile container soon. Until then, we are enjoying more gorgeous weather here on-island. As you can see from the photos below – the winter crowd is here. These are from Cisco and Great Point.
We have updated Nantucket Erosion with photos from Sunday the 15th for the bluff and Monday the 16th for Eel Point and Steps Beach area.
Sankaty Bluff photos are here http://www.nantucketerosion.com

I’m working on the bluff photos from this weekend and North Shore photos taken today. They won’t be ready today so I thought I would post this photo of lovely sanderlings that Dirck took on Sconset Beach yesterday. There were hundreds of them enjoying a feast.
This weekend brought the weather that has proved to be the bluff’s biggest enemy – a steady rain. When it was over, a 9 foot piece of the bluff was on top of the geotextile containers along with a multitude of other large clumps and the bank at Swept Away had eroded to the edge […]
We are expecting high winds this afternoon and night coming from the southeast. I made a trip in the rain this morning and will go again after the high winds to assess the situation.
More and larger photos are on Nantucket Erosion.
A beautiful day after the storm (not a proper nor’easter) brought us out to see how the Sankaty Bluff fared through two days of high winds and rain. As one would expect, there were considerable losses from the wind that howled straight down the beach, the waves that angled in from the northeast and the […]
Last night a brief summer storm passed over Nantucket, lighting the skies with bolts of lightning. We hurried to Tom Nevers and stood on the site of the old Navy base at the point where the road drops abruptly to the beach below. The sun had set but the sky to the west still held some light and […]
We drove past the Carnival at the fairgrounds to a favorite stretch of beach last night. Dirck had only taken the time after dinner to pull off his boots and grab his fishing rod. It’s always a pleasure in the summer to find a quiet beach to enjoy after navigating traffic and crowds all day. […]
The difficulties of home ownership on Baxter Road are well documented, but there are other stories being told at Sankaty; ones of creation long before the current destruction, ones of great movement of the foundation of our island before the moving of summer houses, ones of marine life 100,000 years before seaside holidays.
Over the […]
We made a trip to the bluff tonight and were rewarded with spectacular beauty as the fog covered the distance and the evening light shown on high clouds.
We revisited a composition we had taken of Swept Away before it was moved and also visited the Davis House which is the true architectural gem of […]
Bluff House is scheduled to be demolished this week. I made a trip to a foggy Sconset beach to get one last shot. Swept Away and one of the homes close to Sankaty are not far behind – they will need to be moved or demo’ed also.
Dirck and I went to Smith’s Point today. It was a brisk day with beautiful Nantucket light. We made a slideshow of bigger images you can see here – Click to View Slideshow

There has been a big change in the beach at Smith’s Point. We went out this evening to document the erosion. Coastal flooding is forecast for tonight.
Beach driving is now impossible here until the access is opened again.
